Nathan Brewster is a reporter working for a newspaper in Hawaii. Just a small tabloid, really. Nothing like the big mainstream paper in Indianapolis where he worked previously. But it makes him happy. Small things in life make Nathan happy these days. Why is that?
Nathan was born with a unique prescience. Not strong enough to be called paranormal or weak enough to classify as intuition. Something in between, an extraordinary normalness--extranormal.
When some kind of trouble is coming Nathan's way, his ears begin to ring. Sometimes it's a chirp. Other times a scream. Could be one high note in the back of his consciousness. Might be a roller-coaster version, slamming side to side and front to back, sucking reality into vacuum and spewing it out. Most times it's tolerable; rarely it's not.
The bad thing about this gift is that it never specifies. The bad thing that's about to happen could be a broken shoelace or it could be some long-forgotten renegade trickster god has escaped his punishment and come to the world of flesh to take revenge on the descendants of those who entrapped him.
Nathan has a few friends in Waikiki, which is on the island county of Oahu, for the uninitiated.
Jael Duncan is his "like" interest and his coworker and the daughter of his boss, John Duncan. A potent combination, to be sure.
Nixon Palolo is his neighbor, sharing the other half of the duplex they rent. Nixon plays ukulele and sings in the island's pre-eminent band Kam's Krew, named after a most famous island chief, Kamehameha.
Others cross paths with the extranormal reporter, both friend and foe, but those are the main ones. For now.
